Bolles vs Raines The Final Round!!

Built up like a championship title fight, Bolles vs Raines II was the game of the week for most people her in Duval. And why not, the two teams had battled tooth to nail just two months earlier in a battle to decide their divsion with Raines coming out on top. IMG_3612This time however the stakes were a little higher, as a spot in the regional finals vs Madison County was at stake. Could Raines prove that the first win was no fluke and that they are rightly deserving of the district title? Or did Bolles show that they let the first game slip away and  refused to let lightning strike twice in the same spot. It was the District Champion Raines Vikings vs the Defending State Runner Ups Bolles Bulldogs at the Grave Yard!

The game featured two high scoring offenses led by QBs Micah Zanders of Raines and Joey Edden of Bolles. Bolles came into  contest averaging just under 40 pts a game, while Raines averaged just over 30 points a game. And all indications from the first quarter suggested that we were headed for those scoring averages in this game.  After one quarter Raines led Bolles 7-6. The second quarter yielded just one touchdown by Bolles to put the score at 13-7 at the half. Christian Bermudez scored on a 5-yard run, and Bryce Newman returned an interception for a score for Bolles. IMG_3556 Raines’ Alex Rutledge rushed for the lone touchdown in the first half for them.

In the second half Bolles managed minmial yardage on the ground as the Raines defense swarmed the heavy run offense of Bolles. Even Bolle’s dead accurate play action was off the mark on the night. Raines had more success moving the football in between the twenties, but failed to convert all evening in the red zone. Ronald Patterson hit two field goals (27 yards, 28 yards) for Raines, but missed a field goal earlier in the 3rd quarter.

After Patterson tied the game 13 all on the field goal.,Bolles responded on a pass from Edden to E.J Porter who leaped over a falling Viking defender and raised to the one yard line. Edden would punch it in from the one two plays later to give Bolles a 20-13 lead with just over four minutes to play left in the game. IMG_3613Raines would get the ball near their own twenty  with plenty of time on the clock. But the Bulldogs defense blanketed the field making the improvisation of Zanders almost impossible. Zanders on a quick read to his right zipped the ball toward his own sideline intended for a Vikings receiver, but cornerback Joe King of Bolles dove in front of the receiver making a great interception to all but ice the victory. Raines had a chance to get the ball back one last time, but Coach Corky Rogers and company called an excellent bootleg off sweep left action leaving Edden open field to cruise for a first down with just over  a minute to play. Bolles would kneel on downs and the game was over.

Coach Deran Wiley and the Raines Vikings have nothing to hang their heads on. With a young team and the hardest schedule in the state, Raines was still able to advance to the IMG_3574second round of the playoffs and be crowned division champions.

Yet this day belonged to the Bolles Bulldogs, who would ride the waves of a storied program into the regional finals for the second year in a row. If Duval’s 3A contender  wants to make it to another championship game they must do so in Madison County versus the Cowboys next week. A game that will almost certainly be the headliner for the State of Florida.
