Duuuval’s Game of the Week!! Grand Park visits Sweet Water

In a tradition forged by the successes of two programs, the Grand Park Athletic Association and Sweet Water Athletic Association once again battled one another the title. There were many different titles at stake today. In the Pee Wee division the Sweet Water Hawks came into the game undefeated at 7-0. A win against Grand Park would cement them at the #1 seed for the playoffs. Grand Park could still win the division title with a win because they would hold the tie breaker over Sweet Water. In Junior Midget, both Sweet Water and Grand Park wern’t playing for the division title, that honor belonged to the Mandarin Blue Tigers. ( who were on hand to scout the two teams)

Instead, both Junior Midget teams were playing for the final spot to advance to the playoffs and face the Mandarin Team. Win and your in.. lose and you go home were the stakes in this game. It was Grand Park visiting Sweet Water!

Pee Wee:

The Pee Wee game was a hard running affair, as the two teams traded early scores. Grand Park led 8-6 at half time. But Sweet Water cranked up the defense in the second half shutting down Grand Park’s running game. Late in the 3rd quarter, Sweet Water forced a fumble in the end zone and recovered it for the go ahead score. It would be all that was needed on this afternoon as Grand Park failed to score again. The final score: Sweet Water 12 Grand Park-8.

Junior Midget:

The stakes were high and the scene was electric for the final game of the evening at Gibbs Park. Both teams knew that this game would decide who would face Mandarin for the City Championship. At the beginning, both teams traded blows trying to figure the other out. Offenses just missed big plays and defenses made gaining yards very tough. Finally, late in the 2nd quarter Grand Park found a solution to their problem.. just give the ball to #1, their main tailback. The Eagle’s offense took flight after giving him the ball, as they scored around the left end for the game’s first score. Their running game brought Sweet Water’s linebackers up which left them vulnerable in the middle. The very next series, Grand Park scored on a TE pop pass giving them a 12-0 lead at half time. Sweet Water would get a TD and two point conversion to bring the game within striking distance at 18-8 deep in the 3rd. But a fourth quarter interception by Grand Park and late score put the game out of reach. Final Score: 21-8 Grand Park.
