{"id":26674,"date":"2016-10-21T01:56:38","date_gmt":"2016-10-21T05:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/?p=26674"},"modified":"2017-04-24T20:51:51","modified_gmt":"2017-04-25T00:51:51","slug":"generals-win-90th-civil-war-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/?p=26674","title":{"rendered":"Generals win 90th Civil War battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DOWNTOWN-The 90th installment of the Civil War rivalry was anything but a classic as visiting Lee dismantled host Jackson 46-6 last night at Tiger Stadium to claim its\u00a0sixth straight win\u00a0in the series.<\/p>\n<p>With a bigger game looming in eight days, Lee did\u00a0what\u00a0it had to do, win and\u00a0stay healthy. The Generals did that\u00a0and\u00a0more,\u00a0resting its starters by the\u00a0start of the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Like it has for nearly ten decades,\u00a0Lee dominated the game from the get go\u00a0and it wasn&#8217;t even that close.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0the fifth play of the game, quarterback Derrick Jones connected\u00a0with Jurial Caldwell across the middle for a 33-yard touchdown\u00a0and just like that the Generals were up 7-0 barely a minute and half into the game.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24865\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24865\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Noodle.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-24865\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Noodle-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"No. 5 Derrick Jones finished 9 of 15 for 123 yards and two touchdowns in the win over arch-rival Jackson. Jones also added 77 yards and 1 touchdown on 8 carries on the ground.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lee opened the game\u00a0with an all aerial assault ordering up\u00a0passes on their first eight plays of the game. It wasn&#8217;t until their third drive that a run was finally called.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did some things on film that lead us to believe we\u00a0could be successful,&#8221; Lee head coach OK Small stated, &#8220;but really we&#8217;re trying to work on some things, make some reads and get out to a fast start.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From there it only got worse after a quick three and out by Jackson, Cameron Wakefield nearly let a ball slip through his hands fielding a punt but rebounded to pick up the bouncing ball at the 35 and cut\u00a0left and ran down the left sideline untouched for a 65 yard punt return putting Lee up 14-0 with 8:04 left in the first quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Juan Thomas picked off a Jones pass on the Generals next possession\u00a0to stop a potential scoring drive, however the momentum\u00a0was short lived.<\/p>\n<p>After Wakefield busted a 18-yard run down to the 25-yard line, the\u00a0Generals were knocking on the door again.<\/p>\n<p>Only\u00a0back-to-back touchdown plays from Jones on a 12-yard keeper and Wakefield on a 9-yard run were called back kept the Generals out of the end zone temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>Jones finally ended the penalty driven drive with a 3-yard keeper putting the Generals ahead 20-0 with 9:37 left till half.<\/p>\n<p>After quarterback Ketwan Mauzon was sacked and\u00a0assisted off the field with a ankle injury, tailback Antwoine Bryant was moved to quarterback.<\/p>\n<p>On the ensuing play, Bryant scrambled and like a playground play directed his receiver down field and threw up a prayer\u00a0tossing\u00a0a 65-yard touchdown pass\u00a0cutting the lead to 20-6 with 8:31 left in the half.<\/p>\n<p>The momentum was again short lived as Isaiah Hopson returned the ensuing kickoff 78 yards untouched down the Jackson sideline putting\u00a0Lee ahead 26-6 seconds later.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been waiting for a game like this,&#8221; Small said. &#8220;Those were\u00a0are first two special teams score of the season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Following a interception from Eugene Bowman, Jones connected with Wakefield for a 13-yard completion, Donnie\u00a0Weatherspoon on a 21-yard completion before capping off the drive with a\u00a0Wakefield\u00a012-yard\u00a0touchdown run putting Lee ahead 32-6\u00a0with 32.7 seconds before half.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24863\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24863\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/LEE-WR-11.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-24863\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-24863\" src=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/LEE-WR-11-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jurial Caldwell added two catches for 48 yards including a 33-yard touchdown reception. \" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/LEE-WR-11-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/LEE-WR-11-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/LEE-WR-11.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jurial Caldwell added two catches for 48 yards including a 33-yard touchdown reception.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Triston Johnson\u00a0sacked Bryant to force another punt bringing the first half to a close as Lee\u00a0carried a 32-6 into the locker room.<\/p>\n<p>After a quick three and out to start the third\u00a0quarter, Lee added to its lead on ensuing drive as Jones scrambled 28 yards down to the 15-yard line on the second play of the drive. Jercoby Groover capped the drive with a\u00a015-yard run to increase the lead to 39-6\u00a0to force a running clock the rest of the game.<\/p>\n<p>Artis Maddox fumbled on the Tigers first play of the ensuing drive and was recovered by Dequan Jackson, who also had two sacks and 1 quarterback pressure play.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Small took out\u00a0all of his offensive starters on the next drive and put in several\u00a0backups including\u00a0Noah Vickers and freshman Allan Bass.<\/p>\n<p>Vickers bulldozed his way in from\u00a02-yards to close out the scoring at 46-6 with 2:15 left in the third quarter.
