{"id":26707,"date":"2016-10-22T02:15:36","date_gmt":"2016-10-22T06:15:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/?p=26707"},"modified":"2016-10-22T10:22:23","modified_gmt":"2016-10-22T14:22:23","slug":"baker-county-wins-close-one-in-claiming-district-5-5a-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/?p=26707","title":{"rendered":"Baker County wins close one in claiming District 5-5A title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MACLENNY-After five\u00a0straight weeks of running clocks and shortened games, everybody was curious how\u00a0Baker County would respond with a close fourth\u00a0quarter game.<\/p>\n<p>They responded well holding off visiting Clay 28-14 at Memorial Stadium last night to win the programs eighth overall district title\u00a0since 1945.<\/p>\n<p>About the only one who wasn&#8217;t concerned at all about it\u00a0was Baker County head coach Jamie Rodgers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I knew the guys would respond really well to this,&#8221; an elated\u00a0Rodgers said. &#8220;We practice really hard Monday through Thursday for this, as games are won in preparation and not just on\u00a0Fridays.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Things didn&#8217;t start out so well for the Wildcats though as the Devils took the opening kickoff and behind Louisville commit senior tailback Colin Wilson marched easily inside the 2-yard line.<\/p>\n<p>A holding penalty though backed the Devils back to the 13-yard line.\u00a0Clay was given a second chance on\u00a0fourth down after\u00a0missing a\u00a033-yard field goal that sailed wide left thanks to an off sides call, but the Wildcats defense held the Devils on fourth and 11 and the Devils came up empty handed after driving inside the red zone.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26706\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26706\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Seth-Paige.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26706\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26706\" src=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Seth-Paige-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Seth Paige came up big for the Wildcats including the go ahead score in the third quarter.  \" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Seth-Paige-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Seth-Paige-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Seth-Paige.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26706\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seth Paige came up big for the Wildcats including the go ahead score in the third quarter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tailback Seth Paige made them pay on the first Wildcat\u00a0play from scrimmage taking a\u00a0handoff from\u00a0quarterback Joe Green 85 yards before being pushed out at the 9-yard line.<\/p>\n<p>Three plays later, Green scored from 4-yards out and the Wildcats\u00a0were\u00a0up\u00a07-0 with\u00a04:33 left in the first quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Clay answered right back though\u00a0behind Wilson and\u00a0sophomore tailback Cedrick\u00a0Brown. The two helped the Devils move down the field with ease, capping it off with a 25-yard touchdown run by Wilson which\u00a0tied the game at 7-7 with 1:02 left in the first quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Just like a heavyweight boxing match,\u00a0teams traded blows back and forth early on until both were able to make adjustments at the half.<\/p>\n<p>Green took a keeper 28 yards down to the 38-yard line, while Josh Haygood followed with a 13 yard run putting the Wildcats inside the 25-yard line.<\/p>\n<p>Three plays later, Green\u00a0juked three defenders on a third and eight play and\u00a0scrambled\u00a023 yards for a touchdown\u00a0putting the Wildcats back on top at 14-7 minutes into the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Clay missed a huge chance to tie the game on its next drive as Jenkins threw a ball deep across the middle and towards a wide open and streaking Ajay Belanger who got his hands on for a brief second before dropping\u00a0what would have been a 91-yard touchdown catch.<\/p>\n<p>It was that kind of night for Clay and had them thinking\u00a0what could have\u00a0been as numerous trips inside the red zone came up empty as well.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26704\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26704\" style=\"width: 307px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Joe-Green.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26704\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-26704\" src=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Joe-Green-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Baker County quarterback Joe Green stepped up big for the Wildcats with several nice runs including two touchdowns. \" width=\"307\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Joe-Green-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Joe-Green-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Joe-Green.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baker County quarterback Joe Green stepped up big for the Wildcats with several nice runs including two touchdowns.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ironically the theme for last nights game was appropriately titled &#8216;Every teams nightmare&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>You can bet Clay won&#8217;t ever forget Seth Paige or Joe Green as the two\u00a0became nightmares for the Devils to handle through out the game.<\/p>\n<p>Trailing 14-7 in the third\u00a0quarter, Clay took advantage of a shanked punt and a non 12 man call to tie things up in\u00a0middle of the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson broke off a 26-yard run to bring the Devils inside the 14-yard line, two plays later Brown bulldozed his way in from 12 yards tying the game at 14-14 with 7:47 left in the third.<\/p>\n<p>Paige broke off a 50 yard run that moved the Wildcats inside the 18, however a unsportsmanlike call against the Wildcats put the ball\u00a0back at\u00a0the 33-yard line. Five plays later, Paige broke loose for a 22-yard touchdown run putting the Cats up 21-14 with 4:13 left in the third.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson limped off the field on the Devils ensuing possession with a possible ankle\u00a0injury but returned obviously in pain on a fourth and 1 play to pick up a key first down. Wilson hobbled back off the field after picking\u00a0up the first down immediately.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26705\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26705\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Josh-Haygood.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26705\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26705\" src=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Josh-Haygood-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Josh Haygood didn't get many carries Friday night but made the best of them when called upon.  \" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Josh-Haygood-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Josh-Haygood-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.duvalsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Josh-Haygood.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Josh Haygood didn&#8217;t get many carries Friday night but he made the best of opportunities\u00a0when called upon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Haygood put the game out of reach on the second play of the fourth quarter taking a handoff from Green and racing 59 yards down the sideline tight roping the final 15\u00a0yards to put the Wildcats up 28-14 with 11:38 left in the game.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being down two scores Clay had several opportunities\u00a0to get back in the game.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson carried the Devils on his back on\u00a0the ensuing drive getting them inside the 10-yard line.<\/p>\n<p>With fourth and 1 from the 9-yard line, Wilson was hit immediately by a host of Wildcats and came up short of the first down by 6 inches.<\/p>\n<p>Baker County took over at their own 9-yard line with a little more than six minutes remaining\u00a0standing between them and their second district title in four years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Behind Green,\u00a0Paige and Haygood, the Wildcats were able to burn about\u00a0four minutes off the clock on its ensuing possession before\u00a0giving the ball\u00a0back to Clay\u00a0with under three minutes remaining.<\/p>\n<p>Shaquan\u00a0Griffin, who made numerous big plays in the\u00a0backfield all night, came up big in the fourth quarter sacking Jaylan Jenkins for a five yard loss. Jenkins avoided a sack on the ensuing fourth down play but sailed a ball high and into the hands of Lee Graham who\u00a0came up with the interception with under two minutes remaining.<\/p>\n<p>Baker County took a knee on consecutive\u00a0plays before Clay\u00a0called a timeout on third down before the players doused Rodgers with the Gatorade Shower.\u00a0Another kneel down and Rodgers got another Gatorade shower this time it counted. The Wildcats found out immediately after the game they would be hosting Belleview Nov. 11 in the first round of the\u00a0Class 5A playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>Clay (5-3, 3-1)\u00a0must beat Palatka next week to wrap up the district runner-up berth.
