Landmark Holds Off James Weldon Johnson To Advance To First Championship Game

Landmark MS- The Landmark Seahawks defeated James Weldon Johnson 37-33 to punch their ticket to the Duval County Middle School Championship game. The Seahawks jumped out to a 12-7 first quarter lead as several players got into the scoring action. #1 Brian Thomas scored 2 points, #0 Corona Davis scored 2 points, and #22 Jakaree Eley scored 5 points in the quarter.

James Weldon would close the gap in the second as D. Bell scored 4 of his 7 points in the quarter. Yet in still, Landmark would take a 19-17 lead into halftime.

Down the stretch in the fourth quarter, James Weldon would pressure Landmark into turnovers and would capitalize by scoring points. They would tie the game late at 33-33 as #11 Santos Delos scored 4 of his 11 points.

James Weldon had a chance to tie the game, but missed two close layups in a row. Landmark would hold off James Weldon in the end, as Davis they hit big shots to give them the lead and Wheeler hit big free throws to hold them off.

Landmark boys basketball makes their first appearance in the championship game. Their girls team appeared in the championship game four years ago led by Ole Miss commit Sandalwood’s Caitlin McGhee. They will face defending champion Kirby Smith for the Duval County Championship next Wednesday at Sandalwood.
