Track Stars In The Making At Jeff Davis Middle School Meet!

Jeff Davis Middle School- It was a great afternoon for track and field, and several middle school athletes from the Western division of the Duval county athletic conference met to race for first place at the Jeff Davis Middle track meet. Here’s a look at some of the winners from the meet.

In the girls 100 meter James Weldon Johnson took both heats along with first and second place at the meet. Kamora Hester won the 100 meters in the first heat and placed first overall.

Sixth grader Audrey Ellis won the second heat and placed second overall. Yet she didn’t stop there, as Ellis would take first place in the 200 meters, rounding the curve and pulling away for the victory.

Said Ellis after the meet, ” I had to make up for my last track meet, I had something to prove”. Prove she did, as the young athlete is part of a very young group for Coach Burton and Coach Wesley. Almost their entire track team is comprised of 6th and 7th graders.

“I’m really proud of all of them”, said Coach Burton after the meet. “We had a lot of 8th graders last year so we anticipated on being very good, this year we’re very young, but they are doing a great job”.

The boys 100 meters went to James Weldon as well, K. Gardner powered through the last 50 meters to take home the win as well for the Trojans. James Weldon Johnson has been known for their championship caliber track teams in the past, and this one is setting up to be another impressive one for years to come.

Stilwell Middle’s Joseph Henderson turned heads at the track meet as well. Henderson won the 1600M, 800M, and kicked it into gear to win the 4×4 relay at the meet. The exceptional 8th grader looks to bring home a county championship before possibly heading off to Ed White next year.

Jeff Davis has one of the best athletes in the city in Jamie French. French won the boys 100 meter hurdles and the 200 meter race. In addition to track & field, French plays football and basketball as well. He’s looking at possibly becoming a Mandarin Mustang next year as he heads to high school.

The athletes are eying more meets to increase their times and continue competing against one another in an attempt to reach the Duval County track & field championships.
