We’ve made it to the mid-point of the 2022 high school football regular season, and there’s a clear picture of the teams that you don’t want no smoke from. For those of us born before the 21st century, the term “No Smoke” simply means no problems or no conflict. So in in a sense, there are 10 teams in Northeast Florida that have shown by mid-season that you don’t wan’t the problems that come with facing them. Let’s take a look at our week 6 power rankings, the teams you want “no smoke” with.

  1. Trinity (5-0) – After defeating 4 of 5 Duval Sports Top 10 teams in our area, the Conquerors have proven to the best teams in Northeast Florida that “You Don’t Want No Smoke” with Trinity. Yes there’s other undefeated teams in the area, but many of those teams refuse to schedule Trinity Christian. Trinity runs from noone, and you have to respect that. After defeating red hot Columbia 43-30, in which the team scored 40 points for the fourth time this year, Trinity finds itself going into the softer part of their schedule. They still have a big showdown with University Christian on deck which seems to be the only true test for them remaining.

2. Ed White (4-1)– Ed White registered it’s second straight shutout of the season defeating Riverside 34-0. The Commanders haven’t yielded over 13 points on defense since week 1, when they fell to Trinity 48-40. As of mid-season, Ed White is the only team to have it’s final score come within a touchdown of Trinity. So they deserve to be the #2 team in the area. They still have tough tests on their schedule including Fletcher (3-2). However, Ed White’s offense haven’t scored less than 26 points this season. That’s tough for the oppoentnes left on their schedule who are struggling to put up points. “You Don’t Want No Smoke” with Ed White.

They’ve yet to be challenged this year. However, tests remaining could come from Baker County (3-1), Dunnellon (2-2), or Suwannee (2-3). As for now, you “Don’t Want The Smoke” from Bradford, as they keep on cooking opponents.

Bruno Alves took the second half kickoff to the house for a touchdown vs the Mustangs last week. The win would make head coach Sean McIntyre the winningest head coach in Creekside history. And he’s done it this year with a new quarterback, running-back, and wide receiver. Their tough schedule gets even tougher this week, as they face Oakleaf (3-2) in a district matchup. They still have rival Bartram Trail and Fleming Island(3-1) to play.

With several teams losing the last couple of weeks, and the Vikings putting W’s in the win column against tough teams, Raines is ready to tackle the second half of their season as a Top 10 team. 9. Mandarin (3-2)– The Mustangs suffered a loss to a very good Creekside team. Both of their losses have come to Top 10 teams at the time ( Bolles 2-3 and Creekside 4-1). It’s something that should be taken into account. Your competition should factor into your place on the power rankings as well as your record. Mandarin moves into the second half of their season feeling confident about their ability to match-up against the best teams in Florida. These opponents, “Don’t Want No Smoke”. A good Lake Mary team is on deck and they have a rivalry game against Sandalwood. Bartram Trail and Fleming Island are still to come as well.

Their two losses have come to Top 10 teams, Mandarin 27-20 and an overtime loss to Jackson 13-10. They defeated Chiles in week 2 who took down former Top 10 team Oakleaf last week. So the case for Fletcher as a Top 10 team is strong, and teams “Don’t Want No Smoke”. What’s also strong are the Senator’s players and coaches. They have several playmakers that are stepping up for them in crunch time, which makes them a tough team to beat as indicated by their close scores. Their game against Ed White will be a big one in the coming weeks.
