Northwest Jacksonville Fl- The final score read Jackson 3, Raines 0, but the significance of the Andrew Jackson Tigers’ regular-season finale went far beyond three sets of volleyball.
Jackson closed its regular season with a convincing sweep of the Raines Vikings, but the night represented something much larger than a win on the court. It was a celebration of sisterhood, courage and solidarity between two Jacksonville volleyball programs that found common ground after the disturbing incident involving Jackson’s volleyball team at Fernandina Beach earlier this season.

Raines had already made its position clear by refusing to play its scheduled volleyball match against Fernandina Beach in response to what happened to the Jackson players. The Vikings’ decision sent a message that the Jackson girls would not have to stand alone.
Then, when the two teams met to close the regular season, they competed against one another—but they also competed with a shared understanding that some things are bigger than sports.
And on this night, Jackson played like a team determined to finish the season strong.

Taylor Dominates in the Middle
Junior Za’Niyah Taylor was one of the biggest difference-makers for the Tigers.
Taylor attacked aggressively from the middle, recording several kills while making her presence felt at the service line with several aces. Her combination of power and accuracy gave Raines problems throughout the match.
Much of Taylor’s success came from the hands of senior Davita Kelly.
Kelly consistently delivered magnificent sets, placing the ball in the perfect position for Taylor to attack. Their connection in the middle became one of Jackson’s most effective weapons and helped the Tigers maintain control of the match.
Taylor wasn’t finished there. She also teamed with Natalia Hamilton at the net to provide a strong blocking presence, making it difficult for Raines to find openings offensively.

The Kelly Connection
While Davita Kelly was orchestrating the offense, her twin sister, Jazmine Kelly, was doing everything she could to keep the ball off the floor.
Jazmine displayed tremendous hustle throughout the match, repeatedly diving for digs and extending rallies that appeared to be over.
Those plays represented the attitude Jackson has carried throughout the season.
The Tigers refused to let the ball hit the floor.
And they refused to let adversity define their season.

Defense Keeps Raines From Winning a Set
Jackson’s defensive effort was just as important as its offensive production.
Skyler Mitchell provided superb serving, helping the Tigers create pressure from the service line.
Nevaeh Jusino and Brayla Hill were key contributors defensively, making plays in the back row and helping prevent Raines from gaining enough momentum to steal a set.
The result was a complete defensive performance that kept the Vikings from winning a single set.
Raines battled, but Jackson consistently answered.
Everyone Had a Role
The Tigers’ victory was truly a team effort. Khloe Nogueira and Natalia Hamilton tracked balls in the air and kept rallies alive, demonstrating the importance of making the next play rather than waiting for someone else to do it.
Hamilton also contributed at the net alongside Taylor, giving Jackson another blocking option against the Raines attack.
Every player brought something different. Every contribution mattered. Head coach Rochelle Strowder guided her team through a season that required more than athletic ability. Her players had to demonstrate resilience, maturity and the ability to continue competing despite circumstances that could have easily become a distraction.
And when the final point was scored, Jackson had completed a 3-0 sweep to close its regular season.

Raines Stood for Something Bigger
For Raines, however, the evening represented more than simply playing another volleyball match.
The Vikings had already taken a stand by refusing to compete against Fernandina Beach following the incident involving Jackson. Their decision demonstrated that their support wasn’t limited to words.
It was action.
The Raines volleyball program, led by head coach Gail Thompson, brought a roster that included Daniyah Smith, Charm McKenzie, Kendall Martin, Emonee Bachelor, Sophia Baker-Flora, Deliah Jones, Jamila Wyman, Gabrielle Little, Gabrielle Green, Jazzmyn Harris, Mariah Smothers, Jamia Carnegy and Sema’J Kemp.

More Than a Season-Ending Match
That is what made the final match against Raines so meaningful. Jackson won the match, but both teams won something bigger. They demonstrated what it means for young women to stand together when something bigger transcends the court.
They demonstrated sisterhood.
They demonstrated decency.
They demonstrated the courage to stand for what is right.

And perhaps most importantly, they demonstrated that student-athletes can have a voice beyond the boundaries of the ball.
Standing for accountability does not mean abandoning competition. In fact, these two teams showed that athletes can compete fiercely while still supporting one another when circumstances demand it.
Jackson’s regular season ended with a 3-0 victory, but the message created by Jackson and Raines will hopefully last much longer than a volleyball season.
Because sometimes the most important victory isn’t the one that appears on the scoreboard.
Sometimes it’s having the courage to stand beside your teammates, your community and those who deserve to be heard.
On this night, Jackson and Raines did exactly that.
