Trinity Blows Away Columbia in Hurricane Aftermath

Trinity Christian Academy- The Trinity Christian Conquerors were scheduled to face the Ribault Trojans in a week 2 High School Football match up Friday but that’s before Hurricane Hermine ravaged North Florida with wind, and rain. Due to the weather conditions all Duval County Public School games were cancelled and unable to be rescheduled on Saturday, leaving private school Trinity Christian without an opponent. In stepped the Columbia Tigers from Lake City, a team that was scheduled to play Camden County (Ga) in week two of their regular season but who’s game was also cancelled. The team out of Lake City has always been competitive and talented, so when the opportunity presented itself the two teams agreed to replace their former opponents with each other and play at Trinity on Saturday, a day after the hurricane moved off the east coast of Florida.

From start to finish it was all Trinity Christian. Columbia received the opening kickoff and began their drive at their own 20 yard line. Runningback Kamario Bell broke off some nice runs putting the Tigers in Conqueror territory early. However the Trinity defense would stiffen up and make the first play of the game. Columbia’s Davin Schuck dropped back to pass from the Trinity 33 yard line when Trinity’s T.J Robinson sacked him and forced a fumble to which Robinson’s teammate JaJuan Dowell scooped up and ran back for the 67 yard touchdown. Robinson and Dowell combined to give their team a 7-0 lead to which they would not relinquish as they did the previous week in Cocoa.

Trinity’s next score came in swift as RB Rasheed Martin scored from 14 yards out. Martin’s run was set up by a big punt return by ATH Tyreke Johnson. All of a sudden Trinity was up 14-0. Columbia would make some plays in the contest including a first quarter interception by Alec Norton on QB Legend Brumbaugh. The INT would buy his team some time to regroup. Yet Norton’s interception would only act as the temporary calm of the eye of the storm, as Brumbaugh would regroup and find Isaiah Washington for a 45 yard touchdown pass. Trinity now led 20-0. Brumbaugh and Martin would score their second touchdowns of the day on a screen pass connection in which Martin did the scampering for the 45 yard touchdown. By this time it was 27-0 with 3 minutes still remaining in the first half.

The second half was more of the same as Trinity made play after play. Including the play of the day where D.J Mathews made an incredible one handed catch in double coverage sending fans and journalist into a tizzy!

.

Trinity rolled big to a 34-0 victory over Columbia. The demise of Trinity Christian was greatly exaggerated and they proved it this weekend against an opponent that they did not have time to game plan for for study. Trinity improves to 1-1 on the season while Columbia falls to 1-1.
