Class 7A: Bartram, Lee, Fleming Island, Columbia headline playoff selections

#6 Fleming Island vs #3 Lee

  •  Lee (9-1)

The Generals have regrouped after their one loss of the season to Ribault a few weeks ago. Coach O.J Small has them on a five game winning streak, including wins over Fletcher and Ed White and have them marching into the playoffs as district champions. With a high powered offense and tenacious defense, Lee is built playoff tough. Quarterback Derek Jones is Mr. Everything for them, leading them in passing and rushing. On defense their secondary and linebackers are extremely physical. Only three teams scored in the double digits versus the Generals. Lee was not tested in the regular season. With their only significant win versus Raines in week #1, the Generals are hard to gauge. Columbia’s loss to Bolles hurt them in points, and strength of schedule. So it should be interesting to see how Lee stacks up against true playoff teams

Key Players:

QB Derek Jones (1450 yds passing,  21 TDs, 5 Ints) (548 Rush yds, 7 TDs)

WR Jurial Caldwell (481 rec yds, 9 Tds)

WR Taz Nicholson (345yds rec, 7TDs)

WR Theodore Ingram (333yds rec, 3 TDs)

DB Eugene Bowman IV

LB Dequan Jackson

  • Fleming Island (8-2)

After missing the playoffs last year, the Golden Eagles made the playoffs based on the points system as runner ups to Bartram. This team, led by Head Coach Damenyum Springs put together a nice regular season campaign with both impressive victories and puzzling defeats. A win over Clay in the first game of the season showed how this team’s dynamic defense can shut down a powerful run game. Yet a loss to Creekside revealed how this team can have mental lapses when expected to perform well. Their defense is led by LB Ryan Smenda ( Wake Forest commit) with possibly one of the best linebacking cores in the area. However their offense is one of the worst in the region, averaging just 245 yards per game.

Key Players:

QB: Dean Hyams (642 passing yds 3 TDs, 4INTs)

LB Ryan Smenda

LB Jack Surgeoner

LB Jackson Bull

RB Dewayne McBride (694 yds rushing, 6 TDs)
