Spring Football Jamboree: Trinity Stifles Sandalwood; Saints Hold Off Lee

Sandalwood- A jamboree matchup featuring athletes with serval collegiate offers, as well as current collegiate athletes in attendance saw Trinity Christian take on Sandalwood and Lee face Sandalwood in two split halves of football.

Trinity vs Sandalwood

Trinity started on offense and it took just two plays for them to reach the end-zone. After a run by 5-star running back Treyaun Webb, Trinity unleashed the 8th grader; quarterback Colin Hurley, who hit rising senior wide receiver Fred Highsmith Jr in stride for an 80-yard touchdown.

The play caught Sandalwood off guard as they were committed to stopping Webb and daring the young quarterback to throw. Well Hurley wasn’t phased, tossing a perfect pass in stride to his wide receiver. Highsmith showed why he’s the man going into his senior season to lead the attack through the air.

Sandalwood moved the ball much more methodically, struggling at times to get into rhythm but was able to get into the red-zone against Trinity. 2022 quarterback Chris Calhoun (UConn commit) showed why he led the Saints in rushing last year, as he escaped pressure and moved the chains on scrambles.

Late in the 2nd quarter of the jamboree, Sandalwood had a chance to tie the game, yet on 4th and goal Calhoun’s pass to the end-zone was knocked away by rising sophomore DB Tyler Jackson.

Jackson and rising senior Taye Brown did a good job as first time starters for Trinity. 2022 wide receiver Lenar Kelley switched over to defensive back for the jamboree, joining the only returning starter Christian Ellis in the secondary. Ellis (15 college offers) moved from safety to outside corner and allowed 0 catches on the day.

Other notes from the Jamboree include 2022 wide receiver Khalil Ward moving into the #1 wide receiver role for Sandalwood. 2023 defensive end Sayvion Blount making plays at the line of scrimmage.


Lee vs Sandalwood

Calhoun picked up where he left off, moving the chains on the ground. The talented quarterback got into the end-zone on a keeper in the second quarter against Lee putting the Saints up 7-0.

Lee has been a popular destination for new talent this off-season and some of those players showed why they will certainly be a force this year. 2022 quarterback Cale Zarah hooked up with one of his new weapons 2022 wide receiver Rickie Shaw for a 55 yard touchdown. Shaw came over from Jackson and has immediately had an impact.

A big safety in 2022 Bryce Capers came over from Trinity and made plays in the box for the Generals. Five star defensive back 2022 Jaheim Singletary (Ohio St commit), showed why he’s the number one corner in his class, catching a would be interception if not for falling out of bounds.

Linebacker Gregory Washington who came over from Baldwin did not play. Wide Receiver Freddie Manning is also a weapon coming over from Ribault. They join players like linebacker Devin Smith (11 college offers) who will make for an intimating unit for Coach O.J Smalls.

Sandalwood’s secondary sealed their 7-6 win in the jamboree. Oliver intercepted a pass to stop a drive, while 2022 Anthony Brackenridge made plays in the air, catching an interception off a deflection to seal the win.
