Spring Football: St. Augustine Works To Return To Championship, Bishop Kenny Works In New Starters

St. Augustine Fl- Spring football continues this week with a Matchup between the Bishop Kenny Crusaders and the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets. Here are some of the game notes from the contest.

The first quarter didn’t have much action, with no scoring and no turnovers, both offenses were still trying to settle into the game. The first quarter ended scoreless, but St. Augustine was knocking on the door. On the first play of the second quarter, USF Commit, Locklan Hewlett found Trendell Anderson for a short passing touchdown. The St. Augustine offense would continue to stay red hot, scoring on four straight possessions in the second quarter.

The next would be a short rushing touchdown by . The following possession, Hewlett would find 4-star wide receiver Somourian Wingo for a short pass, who then broke several tackles on his way into the end zone for the score. When asked about his recruitment process so far, Wingo responded, “A lot of coaches are talking about a lot of good things […] there’s been guys ahead of me who have done this before so it isn’t anything new, I’m ready for whatever is next.”

It wasn’t St. Augustine’s offense doing all the work however, because on the following Crusader possession, the Jackets forced a fumble and recovered. The Yellow Jacket offense would respond with Hewlett throwing a strike down the middle to Trenton Jones, leading to a 50-yard touchdown. In the blink of an eye, St. Augustine was up 27-0. Jones had 1007yds and 6 TDs receiving in 2023.

On the first play of Bishop Kenny’s next possession, wide receiver JP Donovan would take a screen pass 80-yards to put the Crusaders on the board before half. Donovan led BK in receiving yards and touchdowns last year with 686yds and 6 TDs. The Yellow Jackets offense started right where they left off in the first half, by driving all the way down the field culminating with a rushing touchdown.

The Crusaders would respond when running back Jamison Denson burst through for a 30-yard touchdown. Denson joins returning starter Caleb Mattison who led BK in rushing with 814 yards and 7 TDs. After that, both teams would put in their JV players, allowing them to get some experience and some play time. The final score would be St. Augustine: 41, Bishop Kenny: 14.

Kenny will be working in a new starter at quarterback to replace James Resar who signed with Iowa last year. Gavin Hawkins, a 2026 quarterback backed up Resar last year and passed for 237 yards, 3 TDs and 0 INTs in two games. Senior Kolbe Sexton will also be a key player to replace as a leader. Kaleb Lampkins returns as a starter for the Crusaders and will have a captain role. He has several collegiate offers at wide receiver, and was second on the team with 487yds and 5 TDs in 2023.

After the game we caught up with some of the Yellow Jacket standout players on offense: QB Locklan Hewlett, WR Carl Jenkins Jr., and WR Somourian Wingo. Both wide receivers have drawn lots of attention from big schools over the winter.

When asked how the recruitment process has gone so far Jenkins said, “I expected it to pick up after the season […] I’m not satisfied yet and I’m still looking to see what’s out there, I’m just blessed with what I got and it’s a great feeling.” -Carl Jenkins Jr

Quarterback Locklan Hewlett recently decommited from Wake Forest and since committed the University of South Florida. When asked what went into that decision, Hewlett said, “they run a similar offense to what we run at St. Augustine, the coaches have shown nothing but love […] and they have shown me that I am a priority to them and that’s why I made that choice.”– Locklan Hewlett

St. Augustine had a spectacular season in the fall, making it all the way to the state championship, but ultimately falling short. When asked what will it take to get back to the state championship, all three players said its going to take a lot of hard work and dedication to get back to that stage in the fall.

Jenkins said, “Building a real connection within the team, our big word for the season is ONE, so if we keep working together as one and take it day by day, we will be back there.”
