Springfield Middle School’s basketball team has done it again! The Comets secured their third straight Duval County Middle School Championship by defeating Landmark Middle 52-46 in a thrilling finale. This latest victory cements their place as a true dynasty in Jacksonville’s middle school basketball scene.
With an incredible 45-game winning streak, Springfield Middle finished another undefeated season under the leadership of Head Coach Antwan Lewey. Since taking over in 2014, Lewey has built a powerhouse program, capturing five championships in seven years. A former standout point guard at Paxon High School in the early 2000s, Lewey has used his experience to develop a winning culture at Springfield.

The road to the championship wasn’t easy. The season began with 98 eager students trying out for only 15 roster spots on the highly competitive team. From the start, the Comets set the tone for dominance, and only the best could make it. They capped off their regular season by crushing YMWLA (Butler) 61-13, securing their fourth straight division title.
In the playoffs, Springfield faced their toughest test against Fletcher Middle, narrowly escaping with a 32-31 victory. After that nail-biting win, they found their groove, rolling past Twin Lakes Middle 60-23 to advance to the championship. Against Landmark, Springfield proved once again why they are the team to beat, dominating from start to finish.
A huge part of Springfield’s success was MVP Kivory Jones, who stepped up in the biggest moments throughout the season. His leadership and clutch performances helped propel the Comets to yet another title. Coach Lewey praised his team’s dedication and hard work.

As for Landmark they had another great season, and it resulted in impressive wins over good teams. In the post season they defeated Ribault Middle in the first round. Then they soared to a big win over Chaffee Trail Middle, before falling in the championship to Springfield.
With a legendary three-peat under their belt and an undefeated regular season streak still alive, Springfield Middle isn’t just a great team—they’re building a legacy. Opponents will be looking to break their dominance next year, but with Lewey at the helm and a culture of winning in place, the Comets are sure to be contenders once again.
