The James Weldon Johnson Trojans are champions once again! With a thrilling 25-20 victory over the Springfield Comets, the Trojans capped off an undefeated season and secured back-to-back Duval County Middle School Championships.
Leading the way for James Weldon Johnson was MVP Bella Carbert, wearing #23, who delivered a stellar performance when it mattered most. Carbert made key plays on both offense and defense, proving why she was the heart and soul of the team.

The Comets didn’t go down without a fight. They jumped out to a seemingly insurmountable 12-0 lead over James Weldon. Yet they couldn’t seal the deal. Springfield and Head Coach Chuck Brown had an impressive season, making a strong run in the playoffs, including a hard-fought win over upstart Darnell Cookman. But in the championship game, the Trojans’ determination and experience made all the difference.
This season was also special for James Weldon Johnson because it marked the first championship under Head Coach Tracie McQueen. McQueen took over for former coach Erica Burton and wasted no time in making her mark. Her leadership and game strategy helped guide the Trojans through an undefeated season, solidifying the program as one of the best around.

After the game, Coach McQueen praised her team’s effort. “This group worked hard all season, and they earned this moment. I couldn’t be prouder of them,” she said. James Weldon Johnson defeated Landon in the playoffs on their way to the championship game. Their third championship appearance in four years.
With back-to-back championships and an undefeated season in the books, the Trojans have cemented their legacy. Now, the big question is: can they make it three in a row next year? One thing is for sure—James Weldon Johnson is a powerhouse, and the rest of the city must bow to the McQueen and her queens of the court.
