Fleming Island Fl- The energy in the Fleming Island High gymnasium was electric as the Golden Eagles stepped onto the court to face off against the Santa Fe Raiders in a highly anticipated Tuesday night matchup. With the Fleming Island student section clad in pajamas and The Sante Fe Raiders visitor side packed their presence was felt from the warm-ups, the stage was set for an unforgettable match. Fleming Island entered the night undefeated, while Santa Fe was looking to land a signature road win.
The first set was a battle of momentum from the first serve, both teams showed why their volleyball programs are so heavily respected. Fleming Island struck first in set one. Behind heavy hitting from senior Lauren Brosky and junior Lillie Eason, the Golden Eagles found their rhythm early. Despite a tough back-and-forth struggle at the net, Fleming Island held on late to claim the opening set, 25-20.
Facing a 1-0 deficit, Santa Fe responded in the second set. Head coach Eric Marshall challenged his squad, and sophomore Ajah Graddy and Senior Ella Schneider delivered. Answering with pinpoint placement and clever tip shots over Fleming Island’s blockers.
Sparked by Graddy and Schneider’s aggressive attacks the Raiders rallied from an early deficit to take set two, 25-19, and level the match.
With the crowd cheering on every point, set three became a test of endurance and focus. Fleming Island’s setters spread the offense seamlessly, keeping Santa Fe’s defense guessing between slide plays and mid-court attacks. Fleming Island looked poised to regain control in the third set, racing out to a quick 7-1 lead.
But Santa Fe stayed disciplined, using a 5-0 run to tie things up at 8-8. Sophomore Ajha Graddy came alive at the net, hammering down consecutive kills to push the Raiders ahead. Santa Fe built a comfortable cushion and closed out the set 25-20 to take a 2-1 set lead.
In the fourth and final set, Santa Fe kept the pressure on immediately. Strong serving from Senior Karlee Noah gave the Raiders an early 3-0 cushion, keeping Fleming Island’s defense off-balance. The Golden Eagles fought hard to stay within striking distance, but Santa Fe’s relentless attack supported by freshman Holdyn Moore’s pinpoint setting proved too much to overcome.
Santa Fe closed out the fourth set 25-21, handing Fleming Island its first loss of the season in a hard-fought 3-1 victory on the road. Both teams brought high-level energy and skill to the court, making the September 8th showdown a stellar highlight of the season.
They are currently riding a seven-match winning streak, including a 3-1 win over Middleburg. Led by sophomores Taylor Sembower with 113 kills/ 19 aces and Ajha Graddy with 93 kills and 17 blocks. Senior Karlee Noah leads with 20 aces and 214 Digs. While Karlee Noah tied with 17 blocks and Holdyn Moore leads the team with 177 assists.
