Middleburg Stuffs Beachside And Shakes Up District 3-5A

Middleburg Fl- It was everything a District 5A-3 game should be: high drama, swings in momentum, and a finish that required overtime to decide. On Friday night, the Middleburg Broncos came out on top of Beachside, edging the Barracudas 37-36 in a wild finish at Bronco Stadium.

From the opening kickoff, the Barracudas jumped ahead. Early in the first quarter, they struck on a large gain — a 33-yard pass from Eddie Jordan to Maddox Hunstad put Beachside up 7-0.

Middleburg answered quickly: the Broncos’ ground game punched in a 1-yard run by Gino Addison, and they went for two, taking an 8-7 lead into the close of the first quarter. Middleburg leaned heavily on their ground game, and the consistent production by Gino Addison proved the difference.

The second quarter saw Beachside regain control: they posted 13 points on a run by Hunstad, and a short touchdown pass by Jordan to move ahead 20-8.

But the Broncos weren’t done. Minutes before halftime, Middleburg capped a drive with a 2-yard rush by Travis Pinkard to pull within 20-14 heading into the break. Turnovers and situational execution mattered. Both teams traded momentum swings.

The third quarter remained back-and-forth. Middleburg took the lead again with another short run by Gino Addison, plus the two-point conversion, moving ahead 23-20. A bg pass play from Dalton Motes to Jordan Williams set up redzone plays for Middleburg.

Beachside responded later in the quarter with a 26-yard touchdown pass by Edward Jordan to re-take the edge, 27-23. Jordan hooked up with wide receivers Drew Aldrich, Drew Watson, and Vincent Galella on the night, as the passing offense was clicking.

Yet in the fourth quarter, the Broncos found another surge: Addison again breaking loose for a 16-yard rushing touchdown, with the PAT good, gave Middleburg a 30-27 lead. On of the big plays in the game saw Motes hit Williams on a deep pass down the middle.

Beachside answered with a 43-yard field goal from Owen Carey to tie the game at 30-30 and send it to overtime. Jordan led the Barracudas down the field for the score, with clutch plays giving his team a chance to win the game in the extra period.

In the extra frame, the Broncos executed first: Addison capped a 1-yard rush for the TD, his third rushing score of the night. The PAT was good, as the Broncos led 37-30.

Beachside countered with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jordan to Drew Watson. Jordan’s fourth touchdown pass of the night. The PAT would be next, as Beachside elected to go for the tie. But Beachside missed the PAT, sealing the victory for Middleburg, and slamming the door shut on Beachside 37-36.

The win by Middleburg stuffed Beachside’s hopes for a 5A District 3 title, as the Barracudas fell to 1-1 in the district, and next week’s game versus Orange Park (0-3 in district) will mean everything to keep their hopes alive.

Middleburg’s win was possibly the biggest in head coach Ryan Wolfe’s career at the school. He’s been building a program for the last few years to compete in the district contests with teams like Ponte Vedra, and Beachside. Next week, their game at Fleming Island (1-1 in district) will determine if they can force a potential 3-way tie in the district.
