Clay County- For the fifth consecutive year, the Oakleaf girls track & field team are champions of the NEFAC. Their performance has been the benchmark of excellence in track & field in Clay County as both the girl’s and boys have achieved a decade of dominance for Oakleaf.
“As always, it was a complete team effort from the field to the track”said head coach Merlin Smith. He attributed consistency in their approach as their longevity of success. “We teach discipline and respect for themselves and others”.
Rayna Autry started Oakleaf off in a big way by winning the shot put (32’2”) and placing second in the discus with a PR of 80’4” The rest of the team took the baton from her lead.
Brooke Linscomb is their Swiss Army knife, as she qualified for the state championship in five different events. (Shot put, 100m Hurdles, Long Jump, Triple Jump, and the 4×100).
Skylar Smith is another versitile athlete that has been willing to do what ever the team needs to win. Whether it was the 4x800m relay, the 4x400m relay, the open 400m, or even stepping in to anchor the 4x100m relay in the championship. This is what makes her and the entire team so special.
“These young ladies are willing to do whatever it takes for the team”, Said Smith, when asked what he attributes his success as Oakleaf’s track & field coach year in and year out to he says, “they train like you actually want to be better tomorrow than you were today, the rest was taken care of when their mommy met daddy”.
