Down Goes The Big Dogs; Week 2 Power Rankings and Previews

Northeast Fl- There were some big dogs that went down in week 1. Check out whose bark was louder than their bite, and who is the new big dog on the block.

#1. Bradford– Do you know how hard it is to shut out a team in today’s high school football game. Let alone shut out a perennial playoff power in Baker County. The Tornadoes did just that (12-0) last Friday. Coach Rodgers may have the best defense in Northeast Florida. Still, 12 points isn’t a lot and it all came in the first half. They need more from the offense against good teams. Baldwin is a good team.

Baldwin(1-0) at Bradford (1-0)

#2. Trinity Christian– Colin Hurley tossed 2 touchdowns and Darnell Rogers ran for a buck eighty as Trinity ran away with the game in the second half over a tough Ed White team. While all eyes were on Fletcher vs Mandarin, Trinity and Coach Verlon Dorminey made a strong claim that they’re still the team to beat in the city. American Heritage is up next. They have to start faster than last week in order to keep their winning streak over Heritage going.

Trinity (1-0) at American Heritage (1-0)

#3. Mandarin– Mandarin proved to everyone that they’re not just hype they are here, and here to stay. A very impressive win over Fletcher showcased a powerful run game (4TDs) and QB Tramell Jones passing for 257yds and a TD even though he began the game on the bench due to Mandarin’s heavy run package. The defense came away with several turnovers, making for a dangerous squad for Coach Toby . They can’t lose awareness after the big win, as a mad Bulldog team is up next. Beware of Dog!

Bolles(0-1) at Mandarin (1-0)

#4. St Augustine (1-0) – Anytime you can go into Bolles and beat them the first game of the season it’s impressive! St Augustine did just that with an improbable come from behind victory, thanks to a last second deep pass by QB Locklan Hewlett, and an amazing catch by WR Myles Simmons. Coach Braddock has some elite talent on his hands. He’s been waiting some years for a team like this again. They were down two scores in the second half which which they can’t sustain winning like that. Still, watch out for the Jackets!

Bye week

#5. Raines (1-0)- The Vikings landed off University Blvd for a much anticipated clash of championship titans against University Christian, and they left victorious. This is a big physical team upfront on both sides of the ball whom will give any team problems who face them. They have playmakers at the skill position too, who are eager to make a name for themselves. Dangerous combination for Coach Masline and company. They must stay though, several unnecessary penalties week 1. They have a bye week to enforce that.

Bye Week

#6. Bartram– The Bears got the win for first year head coach Cory Johns. A tough one on the road against St Johns county rival Ponte Vedra. It was a close game, as any rival game should be. But many are wondering if the close call is because Ponte Vedra is just that good this year, or is Bartram  just that shaky? We’ll settle with the former and say Bartram is still a Top 10 team. They need more from other playmakers  besides Laython Biddle and RileyTrujillo.

Seabreeze (0-1) at Bartram (1-0)

#7. Bishop Kenny– The Crusaders may just have the best quarterback in the state of Florida in 2024 Iowa commit James Resar. He put on a show accounting for all 5 of Kenny’s touchdowns. They even eased off the gas versus First Coast who was ranked #10 last week in the Power Rankings. Resar has weapons on offense so teams will have to outscore them. Defensively they lack speed which hurts their ranking.

Bishop Kenny at Middleburg RESCHEDULED Oct 20th

#8. Fletcher– The Senators  wanted that game against Mandarin real bad. The problem is, they made some real bad mistakes that cost them the game. No doubt Coach Fason is challenging his team to execute better going forward. This is still one of the most talented teams in the area, and QB Marcelis Tate and WR Troy Hillman Jr showed it in week 1. They have more talent on the roster that will break out soon.

Fletcher(0-1) at Chiles (0-1)

#9. Fleming Island– Great first win by head coach Chad Parker. The former Bartram assistant took over for long time Eagles head coach Dameyum Springs, and got a nice performance against rival Clay. Cibastian Broughton is making a case for the best QB in the area, passing for 5 TDs to 4 different receivers. That’s a winning combination! Tougher competition will define them going forward. NFEI may define “tougher” after their wink ear West Nassau last week.

Fleming Island (1-0) at NFEI (1-0)

#10. Oakleaf– Another great win for a new head coach. Christopher Foy came over from Jackson and continued his winning ways with a shellacking of rival Orange Park. This team has young playmakers, but has experience at the QB position. They are physical and that is something new for the Knights who’ve been finesse in previous years. The’ll have to be physical facing Baker County this week.
Baker County (0-1) at Oakleaf (1-0)

Best of the rest

Yulee(1-0), Baldwin (1-0), Bolles (0-1), Riverside(1-0), Ponte Vedra (0-1)
