A Champion’s Identity: Trinity Football 2014

The Conquerors of Trinity Christian are many things…

  • They are the defending Class 3A State Champions.
  • They currently are ranked #2 in state of Florida and number #7 in the nation. (Maxpreps)
  • They are the highest recruited program in the area right now, with five players ranked in the ESPN top 300: DS trinity 7

They are truly a powerhouse in every sense of the word, when it comes to high school football.

But just like any championship team, the task for the next year is to ignore the distractions, minimize the hype, and stay focused on the prize. This isn’t always an easy feat for a talented football team. Just ask the 1998 Raines Vikings, or the 2012 Bolles Bulldogs.  Winning back to back titles is tough. It takes a special group of coaches and players and many around the country believe Trinity has this at their program.
DS trinity 8The teams play makers are spread all over the field. Beginning with CB Kevin Toliver II one of the top prospects in the country. Then there’s Jeffery Holland (OLB) one of the best, if not the best in the city.  Following him are  Kendrick Norton (OG/DT), also Ben Edwards (S), and don’t forget Deontai Williams (S). All three players who’s individual games specifically impact the entire game at their positions.

And then there’s coach Verlon Dorminey, the glue that holds it all together. He is a passionate coach who is always putting things in perspective for his DS trinity2team. One assistant coach said  ” if our team believes we will blow a team out by fifty points, Coach Dorminey will prepare us during the week as if we’ll lose by fifty points.”  It’s an edge every Head Coach wishes their team possessed, especially when attempting to repeat. And after witnessing their practice last week, I can definitely see a team that’s excited yet grounded.

Senior OG/DT Kendrick Norton says he is excited about the upcoming season because “we play a lot of prime time games “. The former Dupont Middle baller stresses the need for his team to take it one game at a time. DS trinity 4     ” I feel as long as we stay focused and stay together as a team no one should stop us”. Jeffery Holland also feels great about the upcoming season. He believes the key is the senior class which prepares hard at the direction of their ” great coaching staff”. Holland knows about hard work coming from Jefferson Davis Middle in Baldwin FL, and playing in a unlimited weight youth football league in Baker County. It’s made Holland a very versatile athlete to which he plans to showcase this in his final year.

Now if Trinity is to repeat they will need more than just  ESPN top 300 players. They’re going to need a team, and CB Channing Crowley just might be the example of one of those players that makes a play for the team down the road. No he’s not one of the household names your familiar with, but he DS trinity 3is a young talent who played youth football right here on the first coast. A former running back and safety at Normandy and West Duval, Channing is now using what he learned at the lower levels of football on one of the top programs in the nation. It’s something that he can use to mentor up and coming stars like DB Shaun Wade (look out for him) and also motive youth football players in the area can strive for.

Trinity’s schedule looks fairly easy on paper but will include some tough tests. A showdown with the Cowboys of Madison County will be one of their toughest match ups.

Outlook:

DS trinity 7

The conquerors will again run through their schedule and get to the playoffs. And I see no reason why they shouldn’t repeat as champs. Their size, speed, and experience places them above the rest in their class.

Indeed,  the Trinity Christian Conquerors are many things..  Ultimately,  the identity that will  define their season is not what they are on the outside… but rather who they are on the inside.

Special thanks to Coach Verlon Dorminey, his coaching staff, and the Trinity Christian Academy, for supporting Duval Sports!
