Beach of the Unbeaten… Fletcher Over Landmark

Fletcher and Landmark Middle School have both enjoyed success this year on the football field. Fletcher, a team ranked #2 in our Middle School Power Rankings, came into the game with Landmark at 5-0. Landmark, who is ranked #4 in the Power Rankings came into the contest at 5-0 as well, setting the scene for what many thought would be an epic battle at the beach of unbeatens. image

It looked that way for much of the first half as both teams felt each other out. Drives stalled on offense as both the Fletcher and Landmark defenses held their ground. There’s a reason both of these teams were undefeated headed into their game, as both defenses played hard nosed football. But in a game with so much pressure something was bound to burst, and the Seahawks defense was the first to crack. Fletcher’s Running back Cedric Woodson would take the first of his multiple scores on the afternoon around the edge sweeping to the endzone on a blazing run. Fletcher would convert the two point conversion and go up 8-0.

Landmark, who was noticeably undersized compared to Fletcher attempted to respond but could not get anything going on offense. Attempts to get to the edge were cut down by the Senator’s outside linebackers and corner backs. Inside runs, stuffed by their defensive line and middle linebackers. All of which created terribly field position for Landmark. But the Seahawks defense stepped up several times. Late in the second quarter the defense would hold the Senators in a goal line stand after Fletcher started their drive at the Landmark 20 yard line.

Yet after the Seahawks offense stalled again their defense showed it’s fatigue. Seconds before the end of the half the Senator’s Quarterback threw a short pass to his left to Woodson who made several defenders miss on an electrifying run to the endzone to put his team up 16-0.

The run seemed to demoralize the Seahawks as they came out in the second half seemingly deflated. The Senators would add two more scores on the evening to win the game 30-6.

With the win Fletcher improved to 6-0 on the season and 4-0 in the region. The win all but solidified their place as regional champions as the Senators gained a pivotal win over Landmark their closest challenger. They’ll go into their bye week preparing for their final regional game against Mayport. Landmark will look to finish a very fine season strong and hope for a Mayport upset over Fletcher to possibly force a tie breaker.
