First Coast Goes Down Swinging Versus Lee

Lee High School- Runningback  Cameron Wakefield scored three touchdowns on the ground and Quarterback Derrick Jones added two touchdown tosses in the air as Lee defeated First Coast 46-21. It was a slow start for both ball clubs, but in particular Lee had trouble turning early plays into points. On several drives different General players would make a jaw dropping play only for it to be nullified by a penalty or turnover. These mistakes ensured that the score remained 0-0 after one quarter.

In the second Cam Wakefield struck gold on his first touchdown run with 11 minutes remaining in the quarter. He would score two more touchdowns in  similar fashion. First Coast had no answer for him. He and Derrick Jones were just to quick and to fast for them to handle. Jones threw his first touchdown with 5:30 to play in the second. He would run another score in just before halftime to give his team an 18-0 point advantage.

In the second half First Coast came out playing as if their lives depended on it. And it some ways it did,as their playoff lives were at stake. They needed this win badly, and they came out playing like it. First Coast would get prime field position thanks to a Lee interception. Six plays later, Kadarious Sampson scored on a hard nosed one yard rushing touchdown.

After the initial second half touchdown the action picked up with both teams going back and forth. Wakefield added his second touchdown, but First Coast responded with a long electryfying kickoff return from #3 Darius Lewis.

The action picked up on the sidelines too as both bands began to play at each other. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as both teams and bands played hard on the field and in the stands. First Coast seemed energized by the raised level of excitement.

After Wakefield’s third touchdown of the game made it 31-14 Lee, Jones hit Donnie Weatherspoon on an incredible play putting the game out of reach. Jones scrambled in the back field to elude rushers then heaved it 50 yards to the endzone where Weatherspoon caught it in stride. Allan Bass #47 would add another General touchdown. The score sealed Lee’s (4-1) third district win of the season as they kept pace with Fletcher in the district. First Coast put up a good fight but suffered their second district loss falling to 2-4 on the season. It almost certainly eliminates them from playoff contention.
