Can Lee Make It To State?? Columbia Game May Tell Us…

It’s a rematch for the Lee Generals as they welcome the Columbia Tigers to the back yard tonight. Lee defeated Columbia 28-7 early in the season in Lake City,  propelling them to the district championship. It was their first district title in twenty years.

Lee didn’t take being district champs lightly. In the first round of the playoffs they destroyed the Leon Lions (Tallahassee) 42-0. In the game, Lee’s athletes dominated the field of play. Cam Wakefield scored the first touchdown of the game and routinely set Lee up in scoring positions with his plays. Quarterback Derek Jones commanded the offense to the tune of 42 points. He orchestrated the game plan to perfection facilitating the ball to various playmakers in route to a career playoff passing performance.

#18 Isaiah Hopson, #7 Donnie Weatherspoon, and #34 Allan Bass got in the endzone for the Generals who won their eighth straight game and advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1996.
Lee will look to duplicate that performance today against Columbia something that may be hard pressed for them to do. Yet if they can, the Generals may be strong contenders for a run at the championship in Orlando. They’ve certainly got all the tools to make there.

On offense, LT Demetrius Harris anchors an offensive line that gained respect from some of the best athletes in our area. Baldwin’s mammoth DT/OT Howard Allen said of Lee “They execute very well and they play sound football. Harris is their best lineman and he is the reason they run a lot to his side”. On defense Vincent Davis Jr got an interception against Leon, and he and his teammates will be called upon again to make plays in the passing game against Columbia. Linebacker Keirsten Johnson dominated on defense in the first contest vs Columbia, and if the game versus Leon is any indication, he’s in line to have another big game the second go around.

So can Lee make it to State? That question will be a lot clearer to answer tonight after the Columbia game. The Tigers were just one game away from making it to state last year, so Lee could make their strongest case yet with a win. Columbia rides a six game winning streak into the round two playoff match up, and are a vastly different team than the one the General’s faced on September 16th.

A 35-28 overtime victory over district champion Lincoln in Tallahassee showed just how dangerous this team is now. Quarterback Davin Schuck is in attack mode after a slow start to the season. Running Back Kamario Bell, along with ATH Taurean Hill were key components to the Tiger’s come from behind victory over Lincoln. They must do it again but this time in Jacksonville, if they wish to derail the General express from their championship dream.
