Still hope at the end of the tunnel for St. Augustine

Despite a current four game losing streak, their is a light at the end of the tunnel for the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets, who are still mathematically alive for the state football playoffs.

The Florida High School Athletic Association released its first set of power rankings today and the Yellow Jackets are currently in the sixth spot with a 38.40 average.

Losses to Menendez, Palm Coast, Ponte Vedra and Bartram Trail have the Jackets in a situation of win the district or miss the playoffs for the first time in nearly two decades.

The Jackets 19 straight playoff appearances, is third longest among public schools in the state of Florida behind only Lakeland (24) and Mainland (23).

That wasn’t the only shocking developments to come out of the release, as currently Bolles (2-2) sits at top of the Class 5A rankings ahead of both undefeated teams Godby (5-0) and Trinity (5-0).

Despite two losses including a 41-13 defeat to Trinity two weeks ago, the Bulldogs sit at top of the regional standings with a 42.25 average based on losses to Trinity and Rockledge (4-1); ahead of both Godby (41.80) and Trinity (41.40).

Things will change each week based on wins and losses as well as the district standings, as the power rankings for now don’t reflect the district standings.

The top eight teams in each region for Class 5A-8A advance to the playoffs, with the top four seeds being determined by district champions.

The top six teams in each region for Class 1A-4A advance to the playoffs, with the top two teams earning first round byes, while the remaining four teams playing in the first round.

Union County (3-2) and Hilliard (2-3) sit just outside the Region III-1A Power Rankings sitting in seventh and eighth spot right now.

University Christian (4-1) surprisingly sits in the third spot of the Region I-2A Power Rankings, while Eagles View (2-2) is in the sixth and final spot right now.

In Region I-3A, Baldwin (5-0) is in second with a 43.40 average just ahead of St. Joseph (5-0), who has a 42.60 average. Episcopal (2-2) and Providence (1-2) are fourth and fifth in the power rankings and appear to be in good shape right now to make the playoffs.
