Duval Sports takes look back at some of the top performers on the high school gridiron from 2020-2021, and look forward to previewing where some of these future stars will be showcasing their talents this year in college and in high school.

QB -Sammy Edwards (Valdosta State) Senior St Augustine – Numbers wise he had the best year of any athlete in Northeast Florida. He passed for 2,233 yards, 21 TDs while also rushing for 551 rushing yards and 9 TDs. He was one of the main reasons St. Augustine advanced all the way to the State Semifinals losing on overtime. Edwards is not only an inspiration with his play but also with his process as well. He had no collegiate offers after his senior year, but the offers finally came rolling in just days before the February signing day. Never give up!

QB  Walter Simmons III (East Carolina) Senior Oakleaf – It’s been a fun ride for Simmons who excelled at Oakleaf junior high and then continued his impressive play as a freshman starter at Oakleaf High School. His senior year saw him throw for 1,747 yards passing, 20 passing TDs, and added 527 rushing yards with 8 TDs. He finished with 5,745 yards and 50 TDs through the air for his career. On the ground, he ran for 830 yards and 18 TDs for his career. East Carolina is his new home.

For his career he ran for 4,118 yards including a 2,000 yard season last year. Not bad for what many called an undersized kid from Mayport Middle. He’s the top runing-back recruit for the Bearcats and will continue at the next level in Cincinnati.

WR – Marcus Burke (Florida) Senior Trinity Christian- At 6’3 ,180lbs and blazing speed, Burke was arguably the best wide receiver in Northeast Florida. Riddled with a hamstring injury, Burke only played a handful of games and in those games hardly played more than two quarters. Still, the University of Florida commit averaged 17.5 yds per catch (29 rec, 510 yds, 4TDs). His last touchdown was the most memorable of his career, a fourth down game winner in the state championship game

WR – Davis Ellis (Penn) Senior, Bolles- One of the biggest play receivers in the state, Davis Ellis caught 41 passes in a run oriented offense for 1,004 receiving yards and 10 TDs. TE – Chris Johnson (UConn) Senior, Westside- Johnson is one of those incredible athletes that dominates both sides of the ball. On offense, he excels at Tight End catching 21 passes for 457 yards. On defense, he excels at outside linebacker wit h48 tackles, 2 sacks, and 5 blocked kicks. Johnson will play College ball at Connecticut.

OL Austin Barber (Florida) Senior Trinity Christian- The best offensive-lineman in the state of Florida resided right here in Northeast Florida. He’s 6’7, 300 pounds of pure aggression who pancakes defenders routinely and also plays special teams showing freakish athletic ability for a young man that size. Six different rushers scored for State Champion Trinity Christian thanks to Barber. A late offer by the Gators kept Barber in the area.

OL Hampton Tanner (Wake Forest) Senior, Fernandina Beach– At 6’4 , 280lbs , Tanner was a big problem for defensive linemen and linebackers. Tanner caught the attention of several D1 programs because of his size and skill in the trenches. He eventually settled on Wake Forest and will be playing there for college.

OL Levontre Daniels (Valdosta State) Bradford- The 6’4, 315 pound mammoth absolutely mauled defenders leading the way for the Tornadoes to average 222 rushing yards per game. He decided to stay close to home and attend Valdosta State for college.

OL Mike Bartilucci (Citadel) Senior Fletcher- The anchor of the Senator offensive line, Bartilucci is one of the main cogs behind 1,000 yard rusher Myles Montgomery in 2021. He’s signed to play at the Citadel in South Carolina.

OL Tre’Darious Moore (Florida Memorial) Senior, Jackson- One of the most athletic offensive linemen around Moore easily gets to the second level and seals off edges when pulling. He be playing college football at Florida Memorial.

K David Kemp (Memphis) Senior Bartram Trail- There’s one kicker you wanted to hit a game winner from 50 yards out and that was Kemp. He nailed a 54 yard game winning kick this year. What’s even more amazing is that it wasn’t his only 50-yard made field goal in his career. He accounted for 75 points for Bartram.

RB- Aaron Jones- (Memphis) Senior Bartram- The best all around running-back in the area was Bartram Trail’s Ajay Jones. The numbers don’t lie. He rushed for 876yds and 9 TDs and racked up 456 yards receiving and 4 TDs. With 1,490 all-purpose yards, and 13 TDs his senior year, Jones set career records at Bartram with 3,440 rushing yards, 5,383 all-purpose yards,65 total touchdowns in four years. After briefly committing to Coastal Carolina , Jones signed with Memphis and will be playing college ball there.

WR- Marcus Peterson Junior, Lake City Columbia- Marcus Peterson quickly became one of the most sought after athletes in the country after his first game against Trinity Christian. He went from 0 offers to 30 offers over night and rightfully so. Colleges saw what we did, a 6’4 200lb athlete who had 205 yards rushing, 286 yard receiving in, and converted to quarterback later in the season to pass for 637 yards with 17 combined TDs.

RB- Alquerious Ray Junior Clay – The leading rusher in Northeast Florida came from Clay and his name is Ray! Alquerious Ray rushed for 1,898 yards, and 24 rushing touchdowns. He was the center piece of an offense designed to pound the rock and he was the perfect player for that. He’s coming back and can easily reach the 2,000 yard mark in the 2021 season.

TE -Nick Elksnis (Florida) Senior Episcopal – He’s the tight-end that coaches dream to find. At 6’6, 220lbs Elksnis was a big reliable target for Coach Mark Brunell and his Episcopal offense even through injuries. He finished with 21 catches, 425 yards, and 5 touchdowns. He also added 5.5 sacks on defense in seven games played. He’s headed to the Swamp to play college ball in Gainesville.

WR- Terrance Anthony Senior Oakleaf – The players all know that he is one of the best wide receivers to play in Northeast Florida. With 898 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns his senior year, he often times put the fear of God in opposing secondaries. He ended his career at Oakleaf with 152 catches and 2,670 yards. He is unsigned at the moment, but will certainly make a college program better. He’s the best one left from 2021 class.

RB- Kade Frew, Junior, Bolles- Frew rushed for 1496 yards and 17 touchdowns on the season. He honestly could’ve rushed for more, but Bolles uses a multipack system. He followed a sensational sophomore season where he scored several touchdowns in the state championship game in 2019, with a jaw dropping junior campaign where he scored on a 60-yard touchdown in the state championship game in 2020. Watch out for 2021.

WR – Patrick Bryant II (Indiana) Senior Atlantic Coast- There were two prototypical wide receivers in the area that met the measurables for size and speed. At 6’2, 180 lbs Bryant was one of them. With 942 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns, he terrorized defenses, often times commanding double teams. After staying at Atlantic Coast for all 4 years, Bryant led Atlantic Coast to their first ever playoff appearance advancing to the third round. He’ll play college ball at Illinois.

RB- Jaison Patterson (Bowling Green) Senior Ed White- Patterson was a work horse for Ed White and he excelled ion that role masterfully. He rushed for 1822 yards, 6 TDs, and was the second leading rushed in Northeast Florida. He did win the Gateway Conference rushing title. He’ll be headed to the next level to play at Bowling Green.
