St. Augustine Fl- When head coach Matt Potak was hired at Menendez high school this year, optimism sprang within the football program that the team would rise as the cream of the crop in St. Johns County. Potak, who came from the middle school ranks at Gamble Rogers, knew many of the athletes first hand in the county and that relationship fostered many parent’s desire to send their kinds to Menendez to play for Potak and his staff. In order to become the team to beat, they knew they had to beat the kings of the county in rival St. Augustine.
The Jackets and head coach Brian Braddock own winning records over Bartram and Menendez, the team premier opponents looking to supplant St. Augustine from their mantel. The Falcons hoped that a King could help them achieve this goal of surpassing the Jackets. This king’s name is King Benford, the Menendez senior quarterback (Navy commit) who leads them in rushing yards, passing yards, all purpose yards and touchdowns. Unfortunately for the Falcons, King was forced to sit out the highly contested contest with an injury, and the kings of the county took well advantage of this on Friday. St. Augustine commenced to a thrashing of Menendez under September sky 44-0, improving to 1-0 on the season. Menendez falls to 1-1.
St. Augustine takes on undefeated Bolles in an away game next week. while Menendez visits Ridgeview (0-1) next week.
