Flag Football Playoffs: Clay Puts Clamps On Jones Securing Best Record In School History

Green Cove Springs Fl- The #2 ranked team in the Duval Sports Top 25 took to the field for a Class 2A Region 2 first round playoff contest Wednesday evening. The Blue Devils navigated an undefeated season, the only team to play at least 10 games and achieve the feat in Northeast Florida.

Led by head coach Jared Moses , Clay got big wins over playoffs teams like Fleming Island, and Dunnellon. They won the 2A-5 district championship, defeating Ridgeview 7-6. They’re first round matchup featured the 10-5 Jones Tigers out of Orlando, and early on it was a tussle.

After consecutive punts by both squads on the first two drives, Clay began their drive at their own 20-yard line when a pass by quarterback Teaghan Moses was intercepted by Ronice Berry and taken the other way for the pick-6. The interception by Berry highlighted a critical defensive play that gave the visitors from Orlando a 6-0 lead.

Yet Moses would redeem herself, and lead her team to the promised land. She would score on a short touchdown run giving tying the game 6-6 in the second quarter. On the point after, Moses would find Yuliana Garcia on a pass play to give Clay the lead 7-6.

The touchdown was set up by defensive back Cora Parker who made a game-changing interception and returned it to the 1-yard line of Jones. The play proved to be a pivotal moment in a Class 2A playoff flag football game.

Moses wasn’t finished. Later in the quarter she found Ava Gerush for a touchdown score as the tall Gerush rushed into the endzone for the score. Tatum Waugh would catch the extra point from Moses and Clay led 14-6 at halftime.

The second half saw Clay’s defense dominate. Charlotte Glavin secured her second of three interceptions on the night by the tall freshman linebacker. The interception set up a score by Tatum Waugh on a pass from Moses. Her third touchdown of the game as Clay pulled away 20-6 for the final score.

Teaghan Moses, a junior at Clay High, thrown for over 2,000 yards in 13 games this season, showcasing her dual-threat ability as a quarterback, while her father, Jared Moses, coaches the team, adding a personal dynamic to their success.

Coach Moses credited his daughter’s resolve by rebounding from the early interception and leading her team to victory. “I’m proud of the way she responded to the early interception and made some nice plays out there, all of them did, and all the credit goes to the girls”.

Coach Moses also touted his defense for stepping up big. Players like Cora Parker who intercepted her second pass in the second half. Tatum Waugh who secured the last interception of the night, Clay’s fifth. Then there’s senior Yuliana Garcia who is one of the lock down corners for Clay. She said after the game “playing both ways is tiring, but I like to intercept the ball and score touchdowns”.

Said senior Kirra Dodson “as a senior it’s great to see the team keep going and going to keep our heads up and stay together as a team”. That togetherness is why Clay is one of only two undefeated teams in Northeast Florida.
