Fleming Island’s Shot At Title Fades In Fourth Against Pembroke Pines

Jacksonville Fl- The energy inside the UNF Arena was electric from the very beginning. Fans from across the area packed the stands, hoping to see another local team celebrate a state championship. Instead, they were treated to a gritty and dramatic battle that came down to the final seconds.

Right from the opening tip, the game turned into a defensive showdown. Both teams played with intensity that matched the roaring crowd. Early in the game, Fleming Island’s Jalil Hill set the tone with an emphatic block that ignited the crowd. The block led to a fast break, where Carson Crawford was fouled while attacking the basket. Crawford made one of two free throws to give the Golden Eagles an early one-point edge.

Soon after, Fleming Island struck first from the field. Crawford knocked down a two-point basket to give Fleming Island a 3–0 lead. However, Pembroke Pines Charter answered quickly. Zacuras Dawson buried a three-pointer to flip the score and give the Jaguars a 5–3 advantage.

The back-and-forth action continued throughout the first quarter. Bryce Robinson added a free throw for Fleming Island, and Crawford later made another free throw attempt to push the Golden Eagles ahead 7–5. Yet Pembroke Pines stayed calm under pressure. Adam Starr tied the game with a two-point field goal, and Dawson added a free throw to close the quarter with Pembroke Pines leading 8–7.

Even though Fleming Island was only down by one point, it felt like they had missed an opportunity. Steals, turnovers, and tough shots kept them from building a bigger lead. Their effort on second chances kept them close, like Ayden Greenidges put back.

In the second quarter, the Jaguars began to gain momentum. Anthony Walcott scored inside to push Pembroke Pines ahead 10–7. Fleming Island responded when Alexander Brown drained a big three-pointer to tie the game at 10–10.

However, Pembroke Pines soon caught fire from beyond the arc. Alex Vardakis hit back-to-back three-pointers, helping the Jaguars stretch the lead.

Ryan Turner later knocked down a three for Fleming Island, but Pembroke Pines kept attacking. Walcott and Robert Guishard added baskets to help their team head into halftime with a 26–20 lead.

One major difference at the break was rebounding. Even though Fleming Island had the size advantage down low, Pembroke Pines guards crashed the boards and created extra scoring chances.

Their big man Guishard and wings like Walcott and Isaiah Jenkins contested every shot and converged on the ball. Their aggressive play led to several second-chance points, while the Golden Eagles appeared a bit hesitant.

But everything changed in the second half.

Fleming Island came out of the locker room with a new level of determination. Carson Crawford led the charge, scoring basket after basket to spark a comeback. He was not alone. Jalil Hill and Diego Rivera both knocked down big shots to keep the pressure on the Jaguars.

By the end of the third quarter, Fleming Island had clawed back into the game. The Golden Eagles trailed just 33–31 heading into the final period, setting up a thrilling finish.

The fourth quarter quickly turned into a nail-biter. Each possession seemed bigger than the last. Pembroke Pines guard Alex Vardakis scored on a fast break after a strong defensive play from Dawson, who also did a great job distributing the ball.

Then a major moment shifted the game. Midway through the quarter, Fleming Island lost its senior leader Ryan Turner after he fouled out. The game featured an unusually high number of foul calls for a championship contest, and that moment proved costly for the Golden Eagles.

Still, Crawford refused to let the game slip away.

With 2:40 left in the fourth quarter, Crawford powered to the basket with his right hand for a tough finish, cutting the deficit to 46–41. Moments later, Fleming Island struck again. On a fast break, Hill delivered a perfect pass to Crawford for a layup and an and-one opportunity. Crawford calmly sank the free throw, bringing Fleming Island within two points at 46–44 with 1:37 remaining.

The drama continued in the final minute. Crawford came up with a huge play after a steal by Fleming Island. he raced down the floor for a layup, trimming the lead to just one point at 48–47 with 37 seconds left.

However, the Jaguars stayed composed. Late fouls sent Pembroke Pines to the free throw line, and they converted their chances.

Trailing 50–47 with just 20 seconds remaining, Fleming Island had one last opportunity. Robinson drove to the basket for a layup attempt, but the shot bounced off the backboard and the rim, ending the Golden Eagles’ hopes. Pembroke Pines added two more free throws to secure a 52–48 victory and claim the Class 5A State Championship.

Although the loss was heartbreaking for Fleming Island, the future looks bright. Carson Crawford, a 6-foot-7 junior, showed star power in the game and throughout the season. Guard Diego Rivera is also a junior, and the towering 6-foot-10 Jalil Hill is only a freshman and still growing.

With those young standouts returning, head coach Traavis Chandler will have another strong opportunity next season. After gaining valuable experience in a championship atmosphere against a confident Pembroke Pines team, the Golden Eagles may be even more dangerous the next time they step onto the state’s biggest stage
